The answer is No. Mulches provide benefits throughout the year. Mulch should be left undisturbed to continue their work. When it begins to breakdown new mulch should be applied over the old layers.

Most mulch beds should be applied at a thickness of 3-4 inches.

Typically we recommend applying Mulch in the spring. Weeds have not yet started to grow and the soil temperature has just begun to warm. This will also help moderate the soil temperature and moisture through the summer months.

This really depends on the type of mulch and the purpose of the mulch. Different types will decompose at different speeds. It is a common practice to top dress much about once per year. For colored mulches that tend to fade with time once a year usually keeps the color vibrant. Top dressing mulch is basically applying about 1″ of new material.

Before top dressing your mulch it is a good idea to cultivate or turn the mulch to help break up clumps of matter. Do not remove the old mulch, it is like a time release fertilizer improving the soil as it decomposes and breaks down. Make sure to keep about 3″ in mulch beds possibly narrowing to 2″ around flowers.

While Roses produce a special bloom, their is nothing really unusual about the way they grow. Rose plants benefit from a good mulch, growing better and healthier on less water with a reduced incidence of the black spot fungal disease.
